چکیده

This paper develops a new approach to solve the problem of interferences during the flank milling of a non-developable ruled surface. Many articles propose to modify the tool path to reduce this problem. A novel approach is proposed here, Computation of Adapted Tool Shape (CATS), which computes and optimizes the tool shape to reduce these interferences. The aim of this CATS method is to maintain a standard CAM system thanks to the tool shape modification. This method is presented for the machining of an industrial part and for a numerical experimental design of nine surfaces. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Towards efficient 5-axis flank CNC machining of free-form surfaces via fitting envelopes of surfaces of revolution

We introduce a new method that approximates free-form surfaces by envelopes of one-parameter motions of surfaces of revolution. In the context of 5-axis computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining, we propose a flank machining methodology which is a preferable scallop-free scenario when the milling tool and the machined free-form surface meet tangentially along a smooth curve. We seek both ...

5-Axis Flank Milling of Sculptured Surfaces

This chapter covers the various free-form surface flank milling strategies available, focusing in particular on those for ruled surfaces as widely used in defining turbomachine parts. All these positionings seek to reduce interference between the cutting tool and the surface to be milled so as to respect the tolerances dictated by the Design Office. The range of strategies presented goes from t...

Iso-scallop tool path generation in 5-axis milling

This paper presents a new method of computing constant scallop height tool paths in 5-axis milling on sculptured surfaces. Usually, iso-scallop tool paths computation methods are based on approximations. The attempted scallop height is modelled in a given plane to ensure a fast computation of the tool path. We propose a different approach, based on the concept of the machining surface, which en...

High accuracy NC milling simulation using composite adaptively sampled distance fields

We describe a new approach to shape representation called a composite adaptively sampled distance field (composite ADF) and describe its application to NC milling simulation. In a composite ADF each shape is represented by an analytic or procedural signed Euclidean distance field and the milled workpiece is given as the Boolean difference between distance fields representing the original workpi...

Geometric Criteria for Gouge{free Three{axis Milling of Sculptured Surfaces

The paper presents a geometric investigation of collision-free 3-axis milling of surfaces. We consider surfaces with a global shape condition: they shall be interpretable as graphs of bivariate functions or shall be star-shaped with respect to a point. If those surfaces satisfy a local millability criterion involving curvature information, it is proved that this implies globally gouge-free mill...
